The group that won “Best Tango Orchestra” at the 1st ever Premios Tangos (the tango Academy Awards), La Juan D’Arienzo, will appear in Philadelphia as part of their first U.S.-Canada tour.  Founded in 2012 in Buenos Aires, La Juan D’Arienzo has exploded onto the worldwide tango scene.  The orchestra recreates the energetic, rhythmic and playful sound of “el rey del compás” (the king of rhythm), Juan D’Arienzo, whose orchestra performed from 1935 to 1975 and is perhaps the most beloved tango orchestra of all time for dancers. La Juan D’Arienzo enjoys a direct link to its namesake orchestra, as it is directed by bandoneonist Facundo Lazzari, whose grandfather Carlos Lazzari was the lead bandoneonist for the original D’Arienzo orchestra.

The Wednesday, March 6 event includes:

* A live taping of an interview with the musicians for broadcast on USALA Radio‘s “Tango Stories” program.  Tango Stories host Meredith Klein will be joined by USALA Program Director, Fernando Mendez, for the interview.

* A workshop on tango music and musicality (for dancers and non-dancers alike), taught by the musicians.

* A concert-tango dance, featuring live music by La Juan D’Arienzo with singer Fernando Rodas.

This event is presented by the Philadelphia Argentine Tango School, and takes place at the Lithuanian Music Hall Association in Port Richmond.  Please see the attached press release for complete details, ticket information, and links to photos and videos.  The press release is also available at this link.

If you would like to cover or attend the event, or can help us get the word out in any way, we will be very grateful.  This is the first time that a complete orquesta típica (meaning 10 musicians with a full bandoneon section) will perform in Philadelphia.  And it is the first time that a tango singer at this level will perform in Philadelphia as well.  This is a landmark live music event for Philadelphia, and we would love to have you be part of it!
